Sharing Your Thoughts (Part 2)

Jasmine, another local fan of the arts, like Bence decided to share her thoughts on Albright's Teens After Dark.  Below, she highlights some of her favorite artistic events in Reading and why it is all so close to her. 

"My latest and most favorite annual event is the Art of Jazz.  This exhibition is closest to my heart because it involves the two things I’m most passionate about, art and jazz.  I have been partaking in this event since I was 12.  I am now 16.  The first year I entered my art work, surprisingly enough, I actually won an honorable mention.  Last year I sold my artwork and also won people’s choice award.  This year I was recognized for being the only student to qualify for the exhibition and setting the trend for other high school students to submit their work also.  If you’re not familiar with the Art of Jazz, it is an exhibition held at the Goggleworks and is hosted by the Berks Arts Council.  The exhibition is usually the first event to honor the annual Jazz Fest in Berks County. 

 

I try to meet as many artists as I can before I go to college.  I am always interested in their journey and hope to be influenced by them.  I try to go to as many galleries and art museums too.  I enjoy going to Philly or New York to be inspired.  Other events that I have participated in were the RAiL program, which entailed working with art students at Albright College and the Fast Lane Art program, which is an event to promote the arts on billboards in Berks County."

April 17: Brighton Beach Memoirs by Neil Simon

A Domino Players production directed by Matt Fotis
The first play in Neil Simon's autobiographical trilogy presents a portrait of the writer as a young teen in 1937 living with his family in a crowded, lower middle-class Brooklyn walk-up. Eugene Jerome, standing in for the author, is the narrator and central character. Dreaming of baseball and girls, Eugene must cope with the mundane existence of his family life in Brooklyn: formidable mother, overworked father, and his worldly older brother Stanley. Throw into the mix his widowed Aunt Blanche, her two young (but rapidly aging) daughters and Grandpa the Socialist and you have a recipe for hilarity, served up Simon-style. This bittersweet memoir evocatively captures the life of a struggling Jewish household where, as his father states "if you didn't have a problem, you wouldn't be living here."

Sharing Your Thoughts

Bence, a fan (and participant) of local theater agreed to answer some questions after seeing Albright's recent production of The Masque of the Beauty and the Beast.  Here are some of his thoughts:

1. What was your favorite part of The Masque of the Beauty and the Beast?
-The whole production was good.  I had no favorite part because the whole thing was amazing.

2. What was your least favorite part?
-The part where the beast was dying.

3. Did any of the scenes stand out to you?  Which ones?
-When the narrator came in at the beginning and walked the isle, and he leaned into the rows and talked to the audience.
Also, the two statues at the beginning were pretty amazing.  The set and lighting was great, too.

4. Which character was your favorite? Why?
-The narrator - he put a lot of energy into his part and was very dramatic.  I loved his costume as well.

5. Do you have any suggestions for the actors, actresses, or anyone else involved in this production to make it better?
-No.

November 15th: Maelstrom, a silent opera by Jeffrey Lentz & Cocol Bernal

Artist-in-residence, Jeffrey Lentz, and his constant collaborator, Cocol Bernal, are thrilled to premiere the third and final chapter in the award-winning Ubu Saga, a bold and lyrical story of love and redemption told through movement and music alone. In the first installment, Spirale, we were introduced to the adventures of Ubu, an affable king who battled the forces of evil to win the hand of the fair Princess Mira. Last fall, the story continued in Vortex where tragedy struck when the couple found themselves trapped in a lethal love triangle. As the final chapter unfolds, we have reached the eye of the storm. An inexplicable calm pervades the House of Ubu. Queen Mira is dead. The King grieves. Caught in the middle, Princess Charlotte, Mira’s illegitimate child, grows in ignorance of the family secrets that contrive to destroy both her and her father. Will they be saved by the power of love and forgiveness, or swept into the raging currents of the maelstrom?

A Domino Players production directed by Julia Matthews

Friel’s story centers on five unmarried sisters eking out their lives in a small village in Ireland in the 1930s. We meet them at the time of the festival of Lughnasa, a celebration of a pagan god of the harvest. The action of the play is told through the memory of the illegitimate son of one of the sisters as he remembers the five women who raised him, his mother and four maiden aunts, in this haunting tribute to the spirit and valor of the past. Winner of the 1992 Tony Award for Best Play, the Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Broadway Play and the New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Play.
